Sharing is caring!

Sky Garden London is the highest public garden in the city, and entry is free if you book ahead. You get a glass-roofed garden, open terraces and wide views over the Thames from the top of one building. This guide helps US visitors plan the visit, from booking tickets to getting there and what to do nearby.

The garden sits in the City of London, close to the Tower of London and the river. Most visitors stay for an hour or two. Plan a little longer if you want a drink or a table at one of the restaurants.

What Is Sky Garden London?

Sky Garden is a three-storey indoor garden at the top of 20 Fenchurch Street. Londoners call the tower the Walkie Talkie, because the top of the building is wider than the base. The architect Rafael Viñoly designed it, and the garden opened to the public in 2015.

Planting fills the space under a huge curved glass roof. Ferns, palms and flowering shrubs grow along winding paths and steps. The glass walls let you look out over the city while you stroll among the trees.

Why it is free

The garden is a public space that forms part of the building. The tickets cost nothing, but you must book a time slot in advance. The restaurants and bars charge for food and drink, and a booking at one of them also gives you access.

The outdoor terrace

One side of the garden opens onto an outdoor terrace. On a clear day the air feels fresh, and the views stretch along the river. You can see Tower Bridge, the Shard and the cranes and towers of the City. Winds can be strong at this height, so bring a light jacket.

What to See and Do at Sky Garden London

The garden is small enough to see in one visit, but it rewards slow walking. Here is how to spend your time.

The views

Start at the glass walls and look in every direction. To the east you will see Tower Bridge and the Thames curving away. To the west you will spot the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral on a clear day. Across the river, the Shard stands tall above the South Bank. Our View from the Shard guide compares the two high viewpoints.

The plants

Take the stairs and paths slowly. The planting changes in feel as you climb, from shady ferns to bright flowers. Benches sit along the way, so you can stop and watch the light move across the glass.

Food and drink

The building holds restaurants and bars, plus a cafe. You can have a coffee, a cocktail or a full meal with the view. Prices at this height are higher than at street level, so decide in advance how much you want to spend. A visit with no purchase is fine, because the garden itself is free.

Sunrise and evening visits

The garden holds special sunrise sessions and opens late on some evenings. The skyline looks very different after dark, with the river lit up below. Check the official site for current sessions, because these change through the year.

How to Book Sky Garden London Tickets

Booking is the most important step. Free tickets go fast, so plan ahead and do not turn up without one.

Book on the official site

Use only the official Sky Garden page. When we checked in October 2026, it said tickets are released weekly, up to three weeks before your visit. Popular slots, especially weekends and sunset times, can sell out quickly. Set a reminder for release day if you have a fixed date.

If tickets are sold out

A table booking at one of the restaurants or bars also gives you access. The official page explains how this works. It costs more than a free ticket, but it can save a trip when you have only one free evening.

Plan for security

Expect an airport-style security check at the entrance, so allow extra time. Arrive a little before your slot. Read the entry rules on the official page before you go, because they can change.

Best Time to Visit Sky Garden London

The best slot depends on what you want from the visit. Clear weather matters most, because haze or low cloud hides the far views.

Morning and midday

Weekday mornings are usually calmer, so you can walk the paths without a crowd. The light is bright, and the glass roof makes the garden feel warm even in winter. This is a good choice if you want photos of the plants.

Sunset

Sunset is the most popular time, and those tickets vanish first. The sky turns gold over the river, and the lights of the city come on one by one. Pick a second-choice slot as a backup in case your first one sells out. Check the weather forecast a day or two before you go.

How to Get to the Sky Garden

The address is 20 Fenchurch Street, in the City of London. Several stations are close by. Monument and Bank are both a short walk away, and Tower Hill is not far either. Check your route on the Transport for London site before you travel.

The streets around the building are busy on weekdays and quiet at weekends. Our guide to getting around London explains contactless payment on the Tube and buses.

What to Do Near the Sky Garden

The area is full of history, so pair your visit with a walk. The Tower of London is a short walk away, and our Tower of London guide shows how to plan that visit.

The City was once the whole of London, and the Great Fire swept through it in 1666. Read the story in our Great Fire of London guide. For a quiet moment, visit St Dunstan in the East, a ruined church turned garden, only a few minutes away. Food fans can reach Borough Market by crossing London Bridge on foot.
